Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is a security process in which a user provides two different authentication factors – a password and a second form of verification – to verify their identity and gain access to an online system. Its primary purpose is to reduce the risk of unauthorized access and protect against various cyber threats, such as phishing, keylogging, and credential theft, by adding an additional barrier to unauthorized access. As cyber threats continue to evolve, 2FA remains a critical tool in the arsenal of modern cybersecurity measures.

Components of 2FA

  1. Knowledge Factor: Something the user knows, such as a password or PIN. This is the most common form of authentication and is the first line of defense against unauthorized access. However, passwords alone are often vulnerable to being guessed or stolen, which is why additional verification is necessary.
  2. Possession Factor: Something the user has, such as a mobile device, security token, or smart card. After entering the password, the user must verify their identity by providing a code sent to their device, using an authentication app, or inserting a physical token. This additional step ensures that even if the password is compromised, the attacker cannot gain access without the second factor.
  3. Biometric Factor: In some cases, a third type of factor, known as inherence, may be used. This involves something the user is, such as a fingerprint, facial recognition, or voice recognition. Biometrics provide a highly secure and convenient method of authentication by verifying the user’s unique physical characteristics.

Benefits of 2FA

Two-Factor Authentication has several benefits, including:

  • Helping to protect sensitive information.
  • Reducing the risk of identity theft.
  • Instilling greater confidence in users regarding the safety of their online accounts.
