What is DLM and how does your system do this?

When you have a site – building, public site. A site has a certain limit of energy capacity (current), current that you can provide in a certain moment. The current can be for the whole building or the limit can be for EV only. In order not to exceed this capacity, we need to have a system to manage that maximum current capacity and is able to distribute the energy between the other energy consumers and or/ other EVs that are charging simultaneously.
In EV Meter Core (our management platform), we can define the maximum current capacity in a specific location and the system distributes the energy between the charging stations, according to specific pre-defined logics. There are different potential scenarios: either there is enough current for all the cars, and each one can receive a certain amount of energy, or there is not enough energy for all charges at the same time, then some cars will receive and some will receive later on.

What factors are considered in smart energy management—battery level, available energy, daily routines, etc. ?

  • From a tariff point of view, you prefer to charge in off-peak hours.
  • DLM – Many cars want to charge at the same time, the system can allocate smartly between different users
Smart distribution – The system can learn how much energy you usually charge per charging session, so when you are connected, the system will know to provide first to the user who usually takes more energy. It is currently not possible to know the battery level in AC charging. That’s why, we rely on data that exists in our system about different users to understand their usual consumption

How do you detect if the car is done charging and manage billing for this?

Charging session stopped:

Session ends/charging paused: we can’t provide energy, the car doesn’t take the energy (car preprogrammed (heated or programmed to stop at a specific point OR the car detects a full battery) >> charging paused for a few minutes >> we notify user the car is not charging anymore.
Charging is stopped (session ended) when user disconnects cable from car or requests to stop the session from the app.

Billing:

  • Public environments: charging after session ends
  • Semi-public: the “company”/location is charging the user according to the “charging by period” report on our management platform
  • Multi-residential: monthly billing according to meter reading (like electricity company)

Is EV Meter Core an agnostic OCPP platform ? Can I host other brands than EV Meter?

Yes, EV Meter Core is running under the OCPP 1.6 protocol, and is fully open to every charging station that is supporting the OCPP protocol.
